The demolition scope included the complete structural and site clear demolition of the 5.65-acre job site. All buildings’ structures, basements, slabs, footings, pile caps, and caissons, and underground utilities were removed. All C&D, concrete, asphalt, and green waste were hauled offsite to make way for the earthwork.

The earthwork scope included the mass excavation and export of 50,000 cubic yards for the new building’s underground parking garage, excavation for the new foundations for the building, and general site rough and fine grading.

Challenges Faced:

With AMPCO performing all three site preparation trades in abatement, demolition and earthwork, the challenge was in scheduling and overlapping the three trades in a finely coordinated fashion so that the project finished ahead of schedule. AMPCO first deployed its abatement team to tackle the giant task of the exterior PCB caulking abatement, while simultaneously remediating the interior asbestos materials and gutting out the complete interior of the structures, so that all that was left was a concrete and steel shell of a building. Then, AMPCO deployed the high-reach excavator and a fleet of excavators and other support heavy equipment to raze the site.

Dust control is always a priority on AMPCO’s job sites, but here at Building 14, it was prioritized even higher, due to this project being done adjacent to many other active County buildings with County employees and other public pedestrians walking around the site at all times. AMPCO deployed its large oscillating dust suppression fans, spread apart along the site’s perimeter, to create a curtain of misted water to prevent fugitive dust leaving the site.
